Christmas Family Fun

January is always a bit of a let down after all of the excitement of Christmas. So in an effort to re-live the holidays, here is a re-cap of the festivities.

"Journey to Bethelehem"
This was an unexpected delight. It was a journey as if we were Jews in a traveling party, similar to what Mary and Joseph must have traveled, going to Bethlehem to be taxed. The night ends at a lovely nativity. The whole thing was very elaborate complete with passports, Roman soldiers, and live animals. However, I should mention that it does not actually take place in Bethlehem, but rather in and around the baptist church where the event is sponsored. This realization came much to the disappointment of a small girl who annonced to her father halfway through the trip, "Hey, we're just walking around our church?!" I hope this saves you from a similar disappointment. "Knowledge, the more you know" (ding).

Most of the "journey" was outside so we bundled up really warm. Once again Alex resembles the child from the Christmas story. You'll see that resemblence a lot as you read this post.

"Heritage Park"
My personal favorite. All of the old beautiful homes were decorated for Christmas each with a different activity. We saw a puppet show, made Christmas tree ornaments, played in the toy shop, and ate french fries and hamburgers at the hotel. Ahh Pioneer traditions.

(the spider web is Lanc'e ornament - once again brilliant but a little creepy)
We even made a stop at Brigham Young's old house where Santa had made an appearance complete with his reindeer. This was a particularly eventful stop for me because it was Alex's first time sitting on Santa's lap. Not wanting to miss the blessed moment, but also wanting to ditch the stoller, I ran to the end of the line, stashed the stroller by the reindeer thinking they would keep an eye on it for me, and dashed up the stairs to the exit. Lance set our darling child on the dear man's lap, stepped back and took a picture, picked Alex up and turned to leave. Here is the picture. Precious!

Pleased that the encounter had ended without incident, I turned to leave as well when Santa called out, "Now wait just a minute young lady." Surprised I turned around only to see him beconning me with his gloved hand and a twinkle in his eye. Confused, but obedient I walked over to his side where he said, "Now how far would you have gone if I hadn't called you back?" Still confused I reply, "Well, all the way home I guess." "Well," he said handing me a candy cane, "now you can be as sweet as me."
As I turned to leave I still couldn't quite figure out what had just happened until about half way down the wreath covered staircase. Santa didn't know that I wasn't Alex's mother. He thought I wanted to see Santa so badly that I stood waiting at the exit hoping to get a glimpse. Now, an adult who wants to see Santa puts me in either the slightly slow category or leaning towards the deranged end of the spectrum. Either way it wasn't a good misunderstanding to have made about ones persona. I turned around to correct the misunderstanding, but he just waved sweetly. (mental thought: yep, slow category. Santa thinks I am handicapped) So I just meekly waved back. But the candycane was delicious.
"Sledding"
In preparation for sledding I bought Alex a hat that would keep her ears warm. Now all she needs are seven sled dog puppies and a pair of goloshes and she is all set. Cheese hill is both delightful and terrifying and I might add very hard to climb in size 14 men's snow boots. Here is daddy and Alex making the first trip down the baby hill. Weeee!

"Gingerbread houses"
A Harris family tradition, these miniature houses are the highlight of New Year's Eve. Even the adults get to participate. Here are me and Lance's houses. See if you can guess whose is whose. I'll give you a hint, remember Lance is brilliantly artistic but slightly scary.
(this I believe to be a self portrait of he and I)

"Christmas with the Beckstrands"
My darling and talented sister made Alex the cutest tutu ever for Christmas. Here she is showing her stuff as a ballerina, although she currently thinks it is more fun to eat than to wear. I am sure this is only the debut of the many twirls and leaps we are sure to see in the future.

(sorry, couldn't figure out how to flip these)
Grandma also had a jungle gym that Alex grew to love while we were there, and it appears that it was also amusing to my brother Corbin.
Boy Fillmore is beautiful after a snow storm, and that baby is so very cute!
Christmas was delightful. It was full of family and many more wonderful events which I didn't have room to write. But in the end all the things we did were just an excuse to be toghther. I love the Christmas season and the reason we celebrate. Merry Christmas to all and God bless us everyone.

Lance (tag I'm it)

1. Where did you meet your husband?
I met Lance at Snow college. I would like to say that we met in a crowded room and our eyes met above the crowd (because we're tall you see) but it was a bit more simplistic than that. We met through a mutual friend who thought it would be great to get two really tall people together, but Lance says that he was stalking me long before that.

2. How long did you date before getting married?
We dated for the school year, and then took a hiatus the next fall. But we never really lost touch and we ended up finding each other again instead of others like we had planned. So all in all we probably dated about a year and a half before we were married.

3. How long have you been married?
It will be 6 years in June.

4. What does he do that surprises you?
He'll still dance with me in the kitchen complete with a serenade of some theme from a musical. That is always a great surprise.

5. What is your favorite feature of his?
His arms. He gives really good hugs, which are even better when you are cold. He is like a furnace. He's got cute puppy dog eyes and rosy cheeks too, although you can't always see them under his tickle beard. But I know they are still there.

6. What is his best quality?
He loves me.

7. Does he have a nickname for you?
Hun, which he uses much to liberally and unintentionally attributes it to many individuals besides myself, babe, which is sometimes followed by the phrase "that'll do pig", and woman, when he is pretend chauvinistic male, which he usually follows with "of my heart". Sometimes I have to add that last part in for him and then we laugh and laugh. Ahhh, good times.

8. What is his favorite food?
Chicken casserole. For those of you who have watched him single handedly eat almost an entire casserole, it really is quite a spectacle. A close second is El Matador.

9. What is his favorite sport?
Horse Jockeying and then maybe basketball.

10. When did you first kiss?
At his apartment at Snow college after we watched Lady and the tramp. The meatball scene gets me every time.

11. What is your favorite thing to do as a couple?
Be with family.

12. Do you have any children?
Oh my yes. Just one, but you would hardly know it by looking at the rest of our blog.

13. Does he have any hidden talents?
He has quite the knack for making Alex giggle, which I have yet to be able to do. He can also put a smile on my face when I am grumpy. That takes talent. He is also very artistic. Everything he makes is beautiful, sometimes slightly disturbing, but always beautiful.
(see, this used to be a watermelon)

14. How old is he?
28

15. What is his favorite music?
New age folk style stuff. Chill music.

16. What do you admire about him?
He can turn anything into a game. No really. We once only had poker chips (they aren't really poker chips lest you think I run a casino night in my basement, but that will get the correct image in your mind- ha, sinners) and a glass bowl and we ended up seeing who could flip the most chips into the bowl. And then we laughed and laughed . . .

17. What is his favorite color?
yellow

18. What is unique about him?
He is above average in height.

19. What are some of his favorite phrases?
Honey will you tickle my arm? Honey will you tickle my neck? Honey will you tickle my back? Honey do you remember when you used to love me and would tickle me all the time? The last one is an attempt at guilt, but that names a few of his more common phrasese.

20. Who said I love you first?
He did on Valentines day in a note attached to some flowers he ordered way down in Fillmore. Of course he said it in person when I got back to Snow, but by saying it on a card in Fillmore my dad was able to enjoy the sweet sentiment as well. I remember a distinct "He what?!" while my mom clapped her hands in delight. And then we laughed and laughed . . .

To end this tribute I must say that I love this man. He is my whole world. Lance is the fun and amusement in our home, and I am greatful he takes me along for the ride. I couldn't create a more wonderful husband or father. Alex and I love our husband and daddy!

Weighing in

Alex is now 4 months old. At 15 pounds 5 ounces and 27.5 inches long she is already starting to take after her parents, tall and skinny. She got a thumbs up from our very friendly pediatrician, and was told she is a good healthy baby. Good job baby. We even survived another round of shots.

In addition, we have already received way to many offers of management made by hopeful potential agents of her future career. Thank you very much but right now we are pleased that she can just roll over.

It's so hard to be little

Thanksgiving

We had two Thanksgiving feasts this year. First stop was my Grandma Prestwich in Orem. While recovering from the festivities back at my grandma's house, Lance spotted a washer and dryer (which we desparately need) advertisement at a door buster price. Conveniently, he also spotted a 46' plasma tv with a similar deal at the same store. So, he and my brother Corbin decided to stay in Orem and do a little shopping. "Man's shopping" they said. Shopping where you stay up all night, camp out in the cold, and go running through the store. Shopping where you get an adrenaline rush and there is a possibility of a fight. Since a baby would definitely interfere with "Man's shopping" I went home with my parents to prepare for second Thanksgiving the next day.

At 8 a.m. the victorious shoppers arrived in Fillmore with tales of their triumph and spoils which included bot the washer and dryer and the tv. They had been up since about 2:30 so they went promptly to bed afterward. Boy, "Man's shopping" sure is hard work. Good job boys. I really am grateful for your extensive efforts on behalf of my laundry needs.

This is Alex deciding that cousins are fun.

Grandpas are fun too!

One early morning in Fillmore, we were getting Alex ready to go back to sleep when she became entranced by the fireplace. And like good parents, we laid our darling child on the floor where she fell asleep watching the fire. Just one of our many proud moments of textbook parenting.

Lance had to go home a day early to see his friends who had flown in from Detroit and Washington D.C. (Hi Dave and Darren) So Perry became his surrogate child while he was away missing Alex. And me too of course.

Pink Fluffy Bunny

Not the game that you play with marshmallows, that is usually only fun after sleep deprivation has significantly lowered your standards, but rather this adorable little coat. Lance made fun of me for making her wear it when it was still 68 degrees outside and said I had become the over-protective mother from the Christmas story by dressing our child in so many layers that she couldn't put her arms down to her side. You remember the scene. Go ahead picture it now, and then compare it to the picture below, and it is true. You'll see a stricking resemblence, although I believe this is the cuter version. In my defense, however, she was warm. Goal achieved.

Two is better than one

Finger sucking that is. When your fist doesn't quite seem to fit all the way into your tiny mouth, the obvious solution is to use the other one to hold your mouth open wider so that eventually it will. Or if that doesn't work, you will at least now have two partial fists in your mouth, both of which are delicious in their own right. Bon appetite.

The trouble with Halloween costumes

This being Alex's first Halloween I wanted to get her a really cute costume so that she could participate in the festivities, and like the novice that I am I ordered it online. And then we waited, and waited, and waited. It didn't make it for our family Halloween party, or the ward Halloween party, or the Play date Halloween party. And we were still waiting onOctober 31st when I decided I couldn't wait anymore and I was just going to go out and find whatever leftover costume was still at the store. As luck would have it, I have a wonderful friend who came to my rescue. Shawn Christensen, upon hearing my dilema, offerred the services of a "Chubby Chicken" costume that her boys would not be using this year. It was so cute that we decided to go and show daddy at work how cute she was. Turns out you can't take a cute baby dressed in a chicken costume into a photography studio and not come out with some pictures. And conveniently Hazen also has a variety of backdrops to choose from including this old barn door. Cock-a-doodle-doo. Wait, that's a rooster. Oh well, I am leaving it anyway.
Nice re-touch work daddy.

After pictures and returning the ugly costume I had purchased in desparation at the store, we headed home, and what would be sitting on our porch when we pulled up but the costume that I had ordered online. I believe this is the definition of cutting it close. The package arrived at 4:30 on Halloween night. I already had kids at my door! I was debating whether to just send it back when I opened it up and saw the Princess Leia wig, which incidentially could also pass as big horn sheep horns, but nevertheless I was sold. Princess Leia it would be.
Maren and Emery came Trick-or-Treating too.

Alex wasn't as big a fan of the wig as I was. In fact she was fairly grumpy and barely tolerant of the whole idea. She did make it through Trick-or-treating without a fuss, being distracted I am sure by what she assumed were all the other miserable children out there whose parents had also dressed them up in ridiculous costumes to parade around (what good was the candy we were getting going to be to her anyway). But she wanted out the second we got home. However, once she was set free she was all smiles agian. Boy, it is a good thing we went to all that effort for a costume.

Thinking about it . . . Thinking about it . . . Yep, happy agian.
