It's a GIRL!!!!

We had our definitive ultrasound and the results are in. It's a GIRL (as reiterated from the title) We love girls!

Halloween Prep

Our quest for pieces to Alex's Halloween costume, as well as my need to be babied by my mom for a few days, led us to my hometown. My home is a wonderful place where nostalgia rules and turkey dinners appear magically on the table. Also, my backyard doubles as Jurassic Park since we have live Velociraptors running in the wild. These ugly but delicious creatures are regulars here and make full use of the picked over garden and cozy flower beds, which incidentally are perfect for sleeping.

After dinner the box of Halloween's past was retrieved from the basement, full of its forgotten terrors and modeled by my brother Corbin. This number I believe is a version of Barry Manilow, Peter Pan, and Daniel Boone

after which the wig quickly scurried away.

And here is a California raisin, which I still remember my mother dancing on stage in for a Relief Society Dinner of some sort.

Luckily we did find something useful. A frilly slip to go under Alex's Little Bo Peep dress, paired here with Lightening McQueen jammies and a fairy heart wand.

Happy Preliminary to Halloween.

Sleeping with the Enemy

A few evenings ago, Alex unwittingly went to sleep with an unwanted intruder (a 1/2 inch round brush), and woke with it tangled in her hair. What is during the day a delightful toy, turns into a destructive nuisance at night. Alex's curly hair was no match for the clutches of the round brush and it became more tightly wound with each toss and turn until her lovely golden main was turned into a brier patch.

It was a painstaking process to unwind each hair from the comb's grasp (during which she was surprisingly patient), but at least we didn't have to cut any off.

Number 2

No we are not potty training Alex, and we have not had any recent disasters with that particular number ending up on my carpet anywhere. This is a different number 2. A much much more exciting number 2. I am talking about baby number 2!!! In the words of a well re-nowned movie "I must scream it too the world, my excitement, from the top of someplace very high!!" (Go watch Cars)

This is also my excuse for my somewhat non-existent blogging updates. Suffice it to say, I haven't been feeling my best. However, I am happy to announce, and is probably evident as I am back to blogging again, that I am now feeling much better. I am currently 4.5 months along and due March 3. We don't know the gender quite yet, not for lack of trying, so we will have to keep you posted there.

We are super super super excited/humble/grateful. I don't really have words. Just a very happy heart.

Alex turns 2

My baby is no longer a baby. As of July 25, 2010 she is now 2 years old, which I believe officially makes her a toddler. She has Lance's "best"hair, his "worst" asthma, and hopefully something of mine mixed in there somewhere. She has the most charming smile and the most pathetic cry, both of which tend to get her what she wants. She loves to play with "kids" and is in the process of learning to share. I love the way she continually finds wonder in the everyday objects around her usually causing her sentences to begin with gasps of excitement. For example "(excited gasp) the computer", or "(excited gasp) mommy's shoes", or most often heard "(excited gasp) CARS?!" She currently likes walks with her wagon, trying on pretty dresses and every pair of shoes she can find, and lat but not least Cars (the movie).

In line with her somewhat contradictory tastes here is our Princess Cars party.

The cake, curtesy of my wonderful mother-in-law Shellie, is modeled after her favorite Car, Doc. Alex is always very concerned when Doc gets hurt in the movie and likes to watch him "race fast". Although she declined eating any, she was nevertheless delighted with her Doc cake, as was everyone else who actually did eat it.
Presents include a wide array of Cars paraphernalia (much too generous but much appreciated/adored by Alex), a pink personal laptop (which she loves and has helped save our real ones), and a Princess dress up and Cinderella doll. (most of which are either being worn or carried below)

She also got a swing set from Mom & Dad. Many happy hours have been spent sliding down the slide, throwing cars/sticks/leaves/etc. down the slide, and giggling on the swings. Lance and Brian spent almost as many hours putting this masterpiece together, but just look at that smile. Ahh reward.

And Auntie Tony provided another wonder filled trip to Build A Bear where we met George (the monkey).
Alex is our lives, our joy, our world. She has a kind heart, a contagious giggle, and can light up any room. We love you Alex! Happy Birthday.

The Wedding Planner

Yep, that's us. A regular J-lo and Matthew McConaughey. My brother found a darling and wonderful girl who he wisely decided to make his wife. They wanted an outdoor reception, somewhere up north close to the Bountiful temple, with a lot of space, and a lot of trees. You may recognize it because it's our place.

In an effort to try to give our yard a face lift we brought in new plants

tore out old ones

and tried to plant grass in some bare spots. Turns out planting grass is a lot harder than expected. Try as we might we still ended up with bare spots on the day of the wedding, which Lance tried to cover up with freshly cut grass clippings. (clever girl)

The end result

The strategically placed tables covered up many of our yards blemishes. Whew! Also, this doesn't really do the decorations justice as you can't see the detail, the lanterns, the table decorations etc. It was really beautiful.

The main event.

Two fairy princesses, one complete with a tractor in hand.

The Reception:

In the end, we decided that Corbin and Crystal were shining so brightly, nobody was looking at the grass. Success, on all accounts. Thanks to Corbin and Crystal who put up with our imperfect offering with smiles. And, special thanks to Brian and Randall for their expertise and manual labor in helping us pull this off. We're so glad we have good friends and family to count on.

The 4th and 24th of July

I have often considered why we celebrate the same holiday only twenty days apart. Yes, I realize the vastly different purposes driving each celebration, but the end result is the same.

Exhibit A: The 4th of July
Family

Parks

Parades

Food and Fireworks

Exhibit B: The 24th of July
Same, but with less pictures.

The conclusion: They are the same holiday.

Possible reasons for this might include:
- we like having two holidays in one month but lack the creativity to come up with something novel to separate the two
- our government is secretly controlled by carnis (carnival workers) who realize that two holidays featuring their rides would boost revenue
- it was so fun the first time, we just have to do it again.

I lean towards the last one. And here is proof.

Happy July everyone!!
